Green Packaging Story

Nongshim strives to reduce environmental impact after the product is sold by accumulating "Green Packaging Story," a best practice of sustainable packaging activities. For sustainable packaging, we are collaborating with various stakeholders across the value chain and contributing to the spread of a sustainable consumption culture by sharing best practices in sustainable packaging with them.

  • Story 1 Simplification of Chochung U-Gua Packaging Film Materials

In November 2022, Nongshim simplified the material of Chochung U-Gua packaging film. Existing packaging materials were mixed with Poly Olefin-based materials and PET materials with high barrier properties, making it difficult to recycle. However, recycling became easier as PET materials were replaced with high-barrier Poly Olefin materials. Since instant noodles and snack products use a very high percentage of film packaging materials, we recognize that it is necessary to secure added value from recycled raw materials through simplification of film materials.

Chochung U-Gua won the Korea Star Awards "Packaging Engineers Association Award"

Nongshim won Packaging Engineers Association Award in the corporate category at the 16th Korea Packaging Competition by developing a Single-material film that can be recycled. To solve the problem that vapor-deposited PET material with high-barrier property is difficult to extrude in the recycling process, we have developed a high-barrier vapor-deposited OPP* material to facilitate material recycling. This technology was applied to Chochung U-Gua packaging, which is an excellent example of facilitating the recycling of packaging film while ensuring product safety.

  • Story 2 Strap Packaging for Doongji Cold Noodles

In April 2022, Nongshim introduced the strap packaging to the bundled packaging of Doongji Cold Noodles (2 types). We secured the technology to attach the strap in the right place in the automated process and tried to secure marketability by improving the design and adhesion. Strap packaging has the advantage of reducing the amount of plastic use compared to conventional multi-pack packaging but claims for damage to packaging materials continue to arise in the diversified distribution environment. To solve these quality problems, Nongshim plans to continuously improve its packaging and production technologies.

  • Story 3 Paper straws in Capri Sun

In December 2022, the plastic straws used in Capri Sun were converted to paper materials. The change is expected to reduce plastic use by 30 tons per year. To overcome the quality limitations of paper straws, we have been conducting joint research and development with our partners. Possibility of risk when paper straws are bent or broken is indicated on the packaging to inform consumers. We plan to continue our efforts to improve the quality of paper straws in the future.

  • Story 4 Ink Diet on Multi-pack

Starting with Mupamatangmyeon in December 2021, as of the end of 2022, the amount of ink used for a total of 15 pack noodle multi-packs has been reduced. Chemicals in ink can generate hazardous substances not only during the manufacturing process but also during the disposal process. It is understood that white ink emits 4.94 kg of carbon dioxide per kg and colored ink emits 3.16 kg of carbon dioxide per kg. In order to reduce the environmental impact caused by the use of ink, Nongshim strives to make packaging materials transparent, leaving only essential information such as brand name and food labeling.

  • Story 5 Paper Packaging Design for Pastarang

Nongshim Pastarang (3 types) products, launched in October 2022, contain efforts to reduce the environmental impact of packaging from the product design stage. We tried to minimize the proportion and amount of plastic used per product by converting plastic film to paper carton and plastic trays to paper carton packaging. Therefore, it is expected that the recycling rate of packaging materials after disposal will increase.

  • Story 6 Apply Paper Carton to Udon Noodle Soup (Pack)

Nongshim removed the plastic tray from Udon Noodle Soup (Pack) in June 2023. At the time of the initial review of the packaging material for this product, the use of trays was unavoidable due to the nature of the production process, but as a result of development and investment in new facilities, it was possible to remove the trays and convert plastic film packaging to paper cartons at the same time. Through this, it is expected to bring about an effect of reducing 83 tons of plastic consumption per year.

  • Story 7 Establishment of a Resource Circulation System for Transparent PET Bottles

Nongshim has been making continuous efforts to secure high-quality recycled PET raw materials and expand PET recycling. The proportion of label-free PET bottles for Baeksan Artesian Water, which received the highest grade for ease of recycling, increased to 28.9% (up 17%p from the previous year). In addition, to secure high-quality recycled PET raw materials, we signed an agreement with Hanam City and Oyster Able, a start-up, to install unmanned transparent PET bottle collection machines. The amount of transparent PET bottles recovered through Nongshim business sites and unmanned collection machines reached 1,144 kg in the first quarter of 2023. In 2022, the amount of recycled raw materials used was 16 tons. We plan to continue to make efforts to expand the amount of recycling within the transparent PET bottle resource circulation system.
